WASHINGTON, D.C. – On this Flag Day, North Country Republican, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, joined other lawmakers in introducing a bill that would require all American flags displayed on federal property or bought by federal agencies be manufactured completely in this country.
The “Make American Flags in America” Act is also being introduced by Congressman Greg Landsman (D-OH), Congressman Mike Johnson (R-LA), Congressman Troy Balderson (R-OH), and Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX)
Sourcing the Flag Manufacturers Association of America, Rep. Stefanik says currently 100% of flags bought by the U.S. Department of Defense are made in America, but other federal agencies are only required to to purchase flags that are 50% manufactured in the U.S.
“The American flag is an enduring symbol that represents the freedoms we enjoy as Americans,” writes Stefanik, “Several small businesses across America, including in Upstate New York and the North Country, share their American pride by making and selling flags.”
One of those businesses, Saratoga Flag Company, which is based in Saratoga County, released a statement supporting the legislation.
“It is important to remember the purpose and reason for Flag Day, which is to commemorate the adoption of one flag, our American Flag. Congresswoman Stefanik’s bill honors the importance of The Star-Spangled Banner; while celebrating our heritage and supporting an industry primarily comprised of small family businesses, the bedrock of the American workforce.”
